This week carl regnéll from uib geo is taking over the content of @portaleniglo
. follow to see more post from him and other scientists from norwegian institutions #uibgeo #repost @portaleniglo
hallais, carl here!
this week, i'll be taking over #portaleniglo.
i'm a #phdstudent
working at #uibgeo
in #bergen. my research focus on glacier and climate variations during the last ice age.
in this post you can see me and collegues sampling boulders above #hardangerfjord
in western #norway.
these large boulders where left there as the ice-sheet retreated during the end of the last ice-age.
by analysing the isotopes in the boulers we can then find out for how long they have been exposed to cosmic radiation, i.e. when the ice-sheet left them there.
this is a method known as exposure dating or 10be-dating.
using this method we can get a better understanding of the timing and pattern of ice-sheet retreat at the time.
this will in turn result in a better understanding of landscape developement in the area and also how ice-sheets respond to a changing climate.
more on how we reconstruct past glacier variations and climate will follow in my next posts! ;)
