Another method to decipher the past climate around Hardangerfjord is sediment coring! In this case it was done by a Russian peat corer and the retrieved sediments displayed a beautiful sequence of different layers from the transition from the last ice-age to our present warm period: the Holocene.
In this example we could see four distinct sediment layers (from the bottom up, right -> left): brown gyttja, grey clay, black volcanic ash, grey clay and brown gyttja.

The gyttja in the bottom and top are from the Allerød respectively the Holocene warm periods. The grey clay layers are from the Younger Dryas cold period when the ice-sheet in Hardangerfjord re-advanced during the very end of the ice-age and sent in glacial meltwater into this location. Between the clay layers lies a black layer of volcanic ash. This is a well-known ash layer from a huge Icelandic eruption some 12 200 years ago called the Vedde Ash.

The sediments from this location can thus tell us a story of how the climate changed from warm to cold and back again.

This week, I'll be taking over #portaleniglo.

I'm a #phdstudent working at #uibgeo and #bjerknessenteret in #Bergen. My research focus on glacier and climate variations during the last ice age. 
In this post you can see me and collegues sampling boulders above #Hardangerfjord in western #Norway.
These large boulders where left there as the ice-sheet retreated during the end of the last ice-age. 
By analysing the isotopes in the boulers we can then find out for how long they have been exposed to cosmic radiation, i.e. when the ice-sheet left them there.

This is a method known as exposure dating or 10Be-dating.
Using this method we can get a better understanding of the timing and pattern of ice-sheet retreat at the time.
This will in turn result in a better understanding of landscape developement in the area and also how ice-sheets respond to a changing climate.

#capricecore reveals that past abrupt global climate changes are imprinted in the layers of sediment accumulated in the ocean over time. Within my (@cayukshuk) PhD I work together with climate modelers, oceanographers, and many other #climateresearchers within the #ice2ice project to study past abrupt changes in the ocean to try and understand what might happen in the future when Arctic sea ice disappears. #capricecore holds an incredible story of past climate change in the ocean. Inside her muddy interior are thousands upon thousands of microfossils called #foraminifera who’s #geochemistry can show us how the ocean properties, such as temperature in the Denmark Strait has changed through time. I (@cayukshuk) use a foraminifera species called C. neoteretis that lives on the ocean floor. After sampling the core and dividing it up in increments to divide the past into time slices, I pick out these tiny fossilized organisms using a microscope. Then, ffter some intensive cleaning to remove unwanted elements, I run the samples through an optical emission spectrometer which measures the optical print of elements from a plasma material. I am most interested in the ratio of magnesium to calcium (Mg/Ca). Larger quantities of Mg mean warmer temperatures and lower quantities of Mg mean cooler. Today I’m (@cayukshuk) going to introduce you to sediment coring, and my sediment core from the #Denmarkstrait.  We use three types of coring systems to extract our climate archives from the ocean floor: multi-cores for the surface sediments (0-1 metre), calypso cores to get the deeper sediments (4-20 metres) and gravity cores to overlap the two to get a continuous archive from the ocean floor as deep in time as we can. The sediments work like a timeline, where the youngest layers are on the surface and the deeper we get in mud layers, the further back we get in age. #GS15-198-36CC is the boring name of my sediment core, but I like to call her “Caprice”, meaning abrupt change of mind. Hi! I’m Eva (@cayukshuk) and this weeks takeover for #portaleniglo. Over this week I’ll give you a glimpse into my work as a #climateresearcher and #PhD. I’ve always been interested in our natural environment and the development of the land formations around us. I took advantage of my many interests and changed research topics over the course of my education. I started out my studies in glaciology, moved on to coastal development and erosion assessment, and now have dived into past climate and abrupt changes. I study #dansgaardoeschger events, natural shifts in global climate that took place thousands of years ago. Sediment cores, like the one in the photo, provide clues about our earth’s past climate.
