Hei! Jeg heter Silje (@siljeglacialis) og tar over portaleniglo denne uken. Jeg holder på med doktorgrad ved @uibgeo og forsker på isbreer. Nærmere bestemt studerer jeg dynamikken til en spesiell del av Grønlandsisen; nemlig en isstrøm. Dette er en elv av is som begynner helt inne ved midten av innlandsisen og beveger seg ut til kysten. Min jobb er å prøve å forstå hvorfor den beveger seg så mye raskere enn isen rundt seg. Et forslag er at den smelter fra bunnen av pga spesielt høy varmefluks fra jorden, geotermisk varme, akkurat som på Island. Da oppstår det vann mellom isen og bakken, og isstrømmen kan skli fortere ut i havet.

Første film viser hvor fort Grønlandsisen beveger seg. Andre film viser hvor høy varmefluksen fra bakken under isen er.

My work is not only fieldwork and modeling it also involves #teaching at #uibgeo. Tough at first teaching earth science in norwegian in my first year in Norway. #fieldwork, #labwork and seminars are a welcome change and I hope we all learn something new.

That’s me, Tobias (@tobiaszolles) in Greenland this summer preparing for the field work at #Eastgrip this summer. This week I will #iglotakeover at #portaleniglo giving you insight into my #phdlife and work, which all evolves around #snow and #ice. 
I am working as PhD student at the university of Bergen on the evolution of the Greenland ice sheet over last glacial cycle. Why am I studying this? Cause I love to #ski and be in mountainous glaciated terrain. When I see ice walls like this, I just want to climb them and study there dynamics and how long we will have them. Don’t we all want to preserve what we love or understand how it works? 
You will see me at work this week which comprises of #fieldwork, #modelling, #teaching and #conferences. See me sample snow in the endless white of Greenland and in the deep snow on the computer and real world. I hope you follow me this week and share my passion for this field.

Another method to decipher the past climate around Hardangerfjord is sediment coring! In this case it was done by a Russian peat corer and the retrieved sediments displayed a beautiful sequence of different layers from the transition from the last ice-age to our present warm period: the Holocene.
In this example we could see four distinct sediment layers (from the bottom up, right -> left): brown gyttja, grey clay, black volcanic ash, grey clay and brown gyttja.

The gyttja in the bottom and top are from the Allerød respectively the Holocene warm periods. The grey clay layers are from the Younger Dryas cold period when the ice-sheet in Hardangerfjord re-advanced during the very end of the ice-age and sent in glacial meltwater into this location. Between the clay layers lies a black layer of volcanic ash. This is a well-known ash layer from a huge Icelandic eruption some 12 200 years ago called the Vedde Ash.

The sediments from this location can thus tell us a story of how the climate changed from warm to cold and back again.

This week, I'll be taking over #portaleniglo.

I'm a #phdstudent working at #uibgeo and #bjerknessenteret in #Bergen. My research focus on glacier and climate variations during the last ice age. 
In this post you can see me and collegues sampling boulders above #Hardangerfjord in western #Norway.
These large boulders where left there as the ice-sheet retreated during the end of the last ice-age. 
By analysing the isotopes in the boulers we can then find out for how long they have been exposed to cosmic radiation, i.e. when the ice-sheet left them there.
.
This is a method known as exposure dating or 10Be-dating.
Using this method we can get a better understanding of the timing and pattern of ice-sheet retreat at the time.
This will in turn result in a better understanding of landscape developement in the area and also how ice-sheets respond to a changing climate.
