16mm • f2.8, 25-30 sec, iso 6400. "i'm doing a short series on a number of things that i feel improved my astrophotography," says michael.
more from michael: experiment with the camera settings. don't be limited to what other people tell you. when i started landscape astrophotography - i adhered strictly to 2 things - settings f2.8 iso 1600 and the rule of 500 (usually being 30s shutter). despite experimenting a lot with photography, i think it still took me around 1 1/2 years before i broke out of that mould of formulas.
now when i'm out shooting, i'll start with some "safe" proven shots but i'll have a list of different things to try out. try a wide variety of shutters, iso, aperture, focal lengths, focus (and more) - and see what happens. if you like the look of 60s exposure? great! there are so many things that can be done differently. then from experimenting, you can see what you liked or didn't and then work out ways to improve it.
on this particular trip - i had several tests planned and took a range of panoramas and images. for this image, i used a fog filter and held it in front of the lens for part of the exposure (akira fujii technique), i originally had a different sort of light painting self-portrait visualized, but it didn't work the way i wanted (for a panorama), so i improvised with speedlites and gary fong .
