12 months today 😢
a year has gone by since one of the most creative, talented, innovative and influential artists of all time left us.
i remember waking up to the terrible news of prince's death and being numb. i was lost for words, especially after seeing him live in concert just 7 weeks prior looking (and sounding) fantastic. even now, a year on, i still struggle to come to terms with the fact that he's really gone.
i don't think a day has gone by where i haven't listened to his music, and today is no exception. i'm kicking off my prince marathon with an album i consider to in the top 3 prince records - controversy.
i love this album. as well as having some of my favourite prince tracks on here, to me, it also showcased his most mature and sophisticated work up until that point.
the tracks 'lets work', 'private joy, 'do me baby' and the extended album version of the opening title track are the reason why i rank this as one of prince's finest.
controversy is such a funky track, which lyrically served as his response to the ever-growing speculation of the private aspects of his life - sexuality, religion, race etc. i've been fortunate enough to see him perform this live a few times and it sounds even better in person. such a brilliant song.
this album is also a perfect example of 'the minneapolis sound' prince pioneered in the early stages of his career - adding a healthy dose of synths to r'n'b and pop rhythms, a technique which went on to dominate the 80s and dance music in decades to come.
let's all honour the purple genius today, and give his stuff a spin.
