Black panther the album
as a child, i would get into trouble at school. others too, were misbehaving. yet, i alone would be reprimanded. i always felt like i was being singled out. i felt ostracized. the teachers would say it was because they expected more from me than the others. i hated hearing that. i assumed i was being cheated. an ignorant youth, i didn’t yet realize what it meant to be disappointed in others. well, kendrick, i can’t promise you’ll love hearing this, but i’m disappointed in you. i expect way more from you than this. the black panther soundtrack is bad, and mr. lamar, you deserve detention.
am i only one that can see through this cheap networking scheme? this is plain and simple, a money marketing grab. marvel probably saw this as an opportunity to broaden its appeal to the casual music audience. makes sense for them to pair one of the superlative rap artists with arguably their biggest black movie. this isn’t the problem, and marvel isn’t at fault. no, the real tragedy here is that kendrick lamar didn’t take better advantage of this scenario. just think about it, a kendrick lamar comic book concept album. or even a reinterpretation of the black panther theme as a political activist album. mmmmm… my mouth is watering just thinking about the endless possibilities. instead, what we get is kendrick & co. club bangers and banal lyrics. sheesh, i hardly imagined i’d ever utter those words or phrases alongside his name. yet, here it is. 14 tracks, at least 20 different rappers, singers, toasters etc., and it’s all so boring. even if this isn’t a proper kendrick lamar release it’s not clear why he’d lend his time unless he’s going to give it his all. maybe that’s the point. this is a good opportunity to cash in hard. fact of the matter is that he’s only on about 20% of this record. easy $. and not to sound redundant, but this music really has nothing to do with the movie that it supposedly soundtracks. come to think of it, the only actual overriding commonality here is that kendrick is laying tracks and backing up a bunch of cats that shouldn’t even be his sidekick (i counted 2 exceptions). now, that to me, doesn’t sound like a superhero, does it?
