(keep in mind, this is all opinionated)
travis scott is probably the most overrated artist of our generation in my honest opinion. after being brought to g.o.o.d music by kanye west and contributing to the 2012 collaborative effort ‘cruel summer’, travis has released 4 projects: ‘owl pharaoh’, ‘days before rodeo’, ‘rodeo’ and ‘birds in the trap sing mcknight’. whilst i do love ‘rodeo’ and think it’s a truly great album, his other projects have never ceased to disappoint me over the years. also, let’s be honest. even though ‘rodeo’ is a great album, it is overpraised by a select amount of people even if you exclude his stans. let’s start with ‘owl pharaoh’. this mixtape literally lacked everything needed to make a great mixtape, whether it was distinction, consistency, actually delivering great music (with the exception of ‘upper echelon’, that s**t is f*****g amazing), the list goes on. then we make the transition to the teaser mixtape in ‘days before rodeo’. whilst it was an improvement on ‘owl pharaoh’ and it includes a top 5, maybe top 3 travis song in ‘the prayer’, it was a varied mixtape that had some highs and some depressing lows. it also contains travis’ most overrated song: ‘drugs you should try it’. now whilst there are dumbly overrated travis songs such as ‘90210’ and ‘the ends’, they aren’t bad songs in themselves, however to me ‘drugs you should try it’ was just plain awful. moving on, the potential we all thought travis was going to instantly bring was displayed on ‘rodeo’ like i’ve already mentioned. one massively disappointing album later... and it’s just about gone. apart from ‘pick up the phone’, ‘outside’, ‘goosebumps’, ‘first take’ and ‘through the late night’ all of the tracks on ‘birds in the trap sing mcknight’ ranged from mediocre to trash, with most of them being trash. ‘guidance’ is still the worst hip hop song of 2016 and easily travis’ worst song to date. that s**t is on ‘happy ending’ level of trash, seriously. overall, if you take all of these 4 projects into consideration and combine them together, it alludes to the statement above. it’s amazing how people have an awfully large amount of praise for such an alright artist.
