Slains Castle was built by Francis Hay, Earl of Erroll from 1597 onwards. Some years earlier he had converted to Catholicism and subsequently supported the rebellion of George Gordon, Earl (and later Marquis) of Huntly, which attempted to reverse the Scottish Reformation.
▫️
The uprising was defeated and in 1594 the family's original residence, Old Slains Castle, was destroyed by James VI (I of England) in retaliation. Hay fled the country but returned in 1597 and made peace with the King. He recovered his estates but opted not to rebuild his former family seat and instead replaced it with (new) Slains Castle.
▫️
The castle was still an impressive structure in the late nineteenth century and it is thought to have influenced the author Bram Stoker at the time he was writing Dracula whilst he was staying at a cottage in Cruden Bay in 1895.
▫️
Slains remained in use until 1916 when it was sold to Sir John Ellerman, a ship-owner, who subsequently dismantled parts of the site. By 1925 the roof had been removed. A plan devised in the 1980s to convert the site into tourist accommodation has, to date, come to nothing.

Crawford Priory was originally built as Crawford Lodge by the 21st Earl of Crawford in 1758. It was substantially enlarged and extended in the early nineteenth century by a sister of the 22nd Earl, Lady Mary Lindsay Crawford.
▫️
Lady Mary engaged architects David Hamilton, and then James Gillespie Graham, to redesign the building in the gothic style, adding buttresses, turrets and pinnacles effecting the look of a priory, although it had had no religious history.
▫️
Lady Mary's heirs, the Earls of Glasgow, further developed the house. In 1871 the 6th Earl of Glasgow built a chapel in the east front. However huge debts forced the 7th Earl to sell off all his estates in order to retain the family seat at Kelburn, near Largs.
▫️
The house then passed to the politician, Baron Thomas Cochrane, son-in-law of the 6th Earl of Glasgow. After the death of the 2nd Baron in 1968 the house was closed, and gradually fell into disrepair and ruin.

Kilchurn Castle was built in the mid-1400s by Sir Colin Campbell, 1st Lord of Glenorchy.
▫️
In 1432, Colin, second son of Duncan Campbell, was granted Glenorchy, at the north end of Loch Awe. This grant was designed to ensure Colin’s loyalty following the sudden death of his elder brother, Gillespic.
▫️
Colin’s descendants, the Campbells of Glenorchy (later earls of Breadalbane), were the most powerful of the numerous cadets of Clan Campbell. Indeed, there were times when this branch almost rivalled the clan chiefs, the earls of Argyll, for supremacy.
▫️
Throughout its history, the castle has served as a fortress, comfortable residence and later a garrison stronghold, and contains the oldest surviving barracks on the British mainland.
▫️
After the first Jacobite Rising of 1689, Kilchurn was converted into a garrison stronghold, but was abandoned by the end of the 1700s.

📍St. Andrews, Scotland. So far, Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 has been everything we hoped for and more (....ok maybe one little snafu but that was quickly rectified — thanks husband).
🏰Glamis Castle is not only beautiful, but has one of the best guided tours we have been on in awhile. There is some very interesting history behind it —-that has to do with royalty, literature and ghosts. .
