Working with patricia mcbride is surreal especially for rubies because she is the original. george balanchine created this role on her in 1967. rubies, along with emeralds and diamonds, make up a ballet called jewels. rubies, set to music by stravinsky, is filled with intricate counts and steps. this role is demanding physically and also requires a lot concentration to count the music.
i love hearing all of patti’s countless behind the scenes stories about how the steps evolved, which ones were accidents that stuck and what she would think when she would execute them.
patti is always pulling something out me beyond the choreography, she wants me to capture the essence of what balanchine had in mind when he made it on her. sometimes we will take a break and watch an old video of her and edward villella. it's amazing to see how incredibly daring she was!
