It is with heavy but grateful hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved blind hen, betty butters. betty was born in a hatchery and used as "packing material" along with other "imperfect" chicks to ship healthy babies to a feed store. luckily, the feed store employees saw that she and her sister, bubbles, were born with anopthalmia (no eyes) and called us to rescue them. betty didn't know how to eat on her own since pecking is a visual skill taught by the mother, and betty was born in a factory with neither a mother nor eyes. being teachers, and knowing she had to eat every few hours, we took her to work with us and syringe fed her throughout the day.
betty eventually learned to eat and grew up healthy and strong, living outside with the other special needs chickens. at about ten months old, however, we noticed she was walking funny, holding her neck strangely, and was no longer able to feed herself. we brought her into the house and began syringe feeding her again, took her to the vet and an avian specialist, but no one could tell us what was wrong. this lasted a little over three months as we searched for answers for how to help betty. we tried different medications and therapies prescribed by the vets, but nothing had the impact we were hoping for.
dr. natalie (seen in the last photo with baby betty) helped our precious girl cross the rainbow bridge where we are certain she can now walk, eat, and see for the first time in her life! we sent her body to ucd for an autopsy, and it revealed a massive intracranial cyst that developed slowly over time likely from the same improper embryonic development that stunted the growth of her eyes. eventually it was so large, it pushed on her brain and caused her to be unable to function properly.
betty loved being held and cuddled and we look forward to the day when we'll see her again on the other side. we are so grateful to have known her. farewell for now, to the sweetest friend we could ever imagine, our little baby betty butters. ❤️🐥🌈 #specialbaby #rescuedandloved #rainbowbridge #sanctuary #veganforher #loveoneanother #missyou #chickensofinstagram #blindandbeautiful
