The series 10 black velvet frock coat is one of the more original designs that costume designer hayley nebauer came up with while creating the various costumes for series 10. the design resembles a mix of an old edwardian frock coat with a very exact slim fit cut as the crombie coats and the odd combination of black italian cotton velvet and a silk duchess fabric in electric blue as a lining that were both sourced from "the silk society" in the london soho district (even though the silk duchess fabric is commonly used for women's evening dresses. why hayley didn't use the electric blue lbd harrison's lining is beyond me). the coat features three internal pockets: two on the front panels and one small pocket for the magnet where the emojis where fastened on for the episode smile on the back.
the most interesting thing about the coat are the swirly blue buttons. 3 medium buttons on the front and 4 small buttons on each sleeve.
the buttons were sourced from "cloth house " which is just next doors to the shop were the fabric was bought from.
the coat itself was interestingly not made by chris kerr who has his tailoring shop on berwick street where each fabric shop is located but by a theatrical freelance tailor who goes by the name of karen francis smith who worked with peter capaldi and hayley nebauer before on the set of the bbc's "the musketeers". sadly she doesn't do private commissions so i got my version of the coat made by a friend of mine.
