My mind is stretching forward to those heady, sun drenched days in July, where the warmth is seemingly unconquerable. It’s just what I need on these days, where Winter can feel like an unconquerable morass stretching on forever. Spring is remarkably close though, so let’s keep that close to the heart.

Another week comes to a close. My callouses have developed new callouses and my knees are decidedly worn out, but I’m chuffed with the work completed. The groundwork being put in place is essential, and but it should pave the way for a riot of colour next year. Until then, I’m getting myself a much needed glass of whisky....

We’ve had such a busy week here in the walled garden. The work has been back breaking, but really rewarding. Winter is one of the busiest times in the garden, much to the surprise of many non-gardeners. The realisation of plans dreamt up during those heady summer months start to be fulfilled, and we start to focus intently on the growing year ahead.

Spent Ammi majus seed head silhouetted against today’s crystal clear skies. This is one of the Ammi plants given to us as seedlings from Fergus at Dixter. A stunning plant from a fantastic bloke.

Sunlight streaming through our iron archway in the Chess Garden. If you look closely enough, you’ll get a glimpse of the work being carried out on our parterres. All will be revealed shortly...

A brilliant shock of sunshine illuminating one of our archways leading to the Chess Garden. Pure magic.

Our Arbutus unedo is blessed with what might be the most Christmassy fruit. The Strawberry Tree’s remarkable little red baubles always feel like a wonderful piece of festive cheer.

I have a tricky relationship with the use of sculpture in gardens. They often feel like a splurge of wealth in lieu of skill. Our ancient Mulberries fill the role of sculpture in this garden for me though. As old as the walls themselves, their tortured frames add a real beauty and sit so purposefully in this space.

Gently warming, clear Winter sun. Days like these are a wonderful reminder that we’re closer to Spring than September. It’s a distant vision, but days like these are magical, reminding us of what’s to come.

This bundle of twigs and flowers doesn’t look too special, but the fragrance is absolutely intoxicating. Viburnum x bodnatense is blessed with a spicy, rich and heady scent that always blows me away. You’ll smell it before you see it too, so keep those noses tuned in.
