This early untitled watercolor painting by John Currin (❗️) from 1978-79 was made while he was a student. I have sketchbooks filled with similar images. Stairways, trees with doors, and a lone figure are all so emblematic of the (my) teenage experience. 🛶🏰📞 “Cliché” organized by @halfgallery for @alminerechgallery is filled with many gems and is opening this evening. 💎 #cliche

On view @theholenyc is “Neophyte” by Matthew Stone. The works on canvas, are figurative paintings, in line with the formalism used throughout art history, with a twist. Stone composes the bodies using 3D software, his own photographed brushstrokes and traditional composition choices, they are then printed on canvas. The show is on view until June 24th and and is a fun way for a traditionalist or novice to reconsider painting. 👣👁

Arthur Jafa’s exhibition “Air Above Mountains, Unknown Pleasures” closes today @gavinbrownsenterprise The show encompasses three floors of the gallery and while the work technically falls under different categories –photography, film, sculpture– each of these mediums is employed with one goal in mind: conceptual portraiture. Each photograph or object tells (through showing) a very human tale, the experience of blackness. From glory to weighted burden, Jafa uses his vision to go beyond the walls of the gallery, stretching outside, beyond the neighborhood and beyond the present...interacting with the past and providing hope for the future. Hung amongst a selection of chained tires, seven feet tall and adorned with bandanas, is a candid photographic portrait titled, “My Little Buddha” (2018), a baby boy sitting on a bed, gently looking towards the camera. It is the child’s gaze (third photo here) that seems to transmit hope, innocence and unbridled strength. The gallery is open until 6pm today. ~KDH @anamibia #mustsee

PSA: 🌭✌️🌭 Me, caught mid-photo, “Yes! The hotdogs are free!” You’re welcome. 🤣 @publicartfund has curated artist Erwin Wurm’s project “Hot Dog Bus” which is parked at Brooklyn Bridge Park and will be providing hot dogs, in exchange for an email address (does that mean it’s not really free?) until August 26th. The bus is open Saturdays and Sundays throughout the summer from 12pm-6pm 🌭 @ddotpalmer

It’s shocking when a celebrity commits suicide or OD’s, because it evens the playing field. It functions as a reminder that people the media and our culture put on pedestals are just like us, human, vulnerable, and in some cases...silently suffering. Depression is a killer as it engulfs the mind in fog. Alcohol and drugs only make it worse, allowing for clarity to drift further and further away. Suicide is never the answer yet at times for those who suffer, seems to be the only way out in a life that feels unmanageable. There is hope. If you are in pain, please reach out. I love Brett Gorvy’s thoughtful post below...it puts words, where feelings live. ~KDH 💜 #Repost @brettgorvy with @get_repost

“it’s strange when famous people die
whether they have fought the good fight or
the bad one.
it’s strange when famous people die
whether we like them or not
they are like old buildings old streets
things and places that we are used to
which we accept simply because they’re
there.
it’s strange when famous people die
it’s like the death of a father or
a pet cat or dog.
and it’s strange when famous people are killed
or when they kill themselves.
the trouble with the famous is that they must
be replaced and they can never quite be
replaced, and that gives us this unique
sadness.
it’s strange when famous people die
the sidewalks look different and our
children look different and our bedmates
and our curtains and our automobiles.
it’s strange when famous people die: -

we become troubled.” -

Shocked and deeply saddened to hear the news this morning of the suicide of Anthony Bourdain. For me he epitomized a lust for life, love, adventure and experience. He opened my eyes to so much understanding of otherwise foreign cultures through a sharing of the love of good food, great company and the essences of everyday life. His programs are a virtual religion in our home, and the only show that Amy, Tamsin and I ever agree to watch together on a family night. I know he touched so many everywhere in the same way and similarly opened up the world for many who could only travel through his eyes. ~BG [continued below]
