There are sooo many benefits to getting involved in your local tech community. Being in the same room with other developers can expose you to ideas, tools and tricks that you didnโ€™t know existed ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ป Itโ€™s also a great opportunity to work on your communication skills and expand your network, so itโ€™s a bummer that many developers tend to avoid meetups ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ I used to be the same, with the feeling that it was a bit awkward to walk into a room where you donโ€™t know anyone, but I quickly realized that I wasnโ€™t the only one. Here are some takeaways I have from my journeys. The crowds at tech meetups skew towards being more introverted, so I noticed that at every event, there are a couple of people awkwardly standing alone waiting for the event to start ๐Ÿ‘ค Just look around for these people, walk up to them, say โ€œhelloโ€ and youโ€™ll quickly notice a sense of relief. You are saving them from standing there alone and potentially just met someone with similar interests as you ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿป The next goal should be to listen more and talk less, being a good listener is the easiest way to ensure you make a good first impression. Plus, youโ€™re there to learn, talking about yourself feels good, but youโ€™re not gaining anything from doing it, so listen more than you ๐Ÿ—ฃ What you can do to prepare is to have some questions / topics to talk about, ask them about other meetups theyโ€™ve attended, what languages/frameworks theyre using or which of the latest javascript libraries is messing with their patience ๐Ÿ˜… The more you do it, the less awkward it will feel and before you know it, youโ€™ll gain some new communication skills, new friends and a broader network that you can be a great asset in your career. You can use meetup.com to find events near you. Go & say hello!

Take a vivid look at children. They are incredibly curious, imaginative and have sooo much energy ๐Ÿคธ I think that there is a obvious correlation between being connected to your curiosity, imagination and having a huge amount of energy. Then we get shipped off to school systems with old ways of thinking, where we are being trained to become useful task rabbits. It stifles our imagination and dulls our energy. Even when you think about historic breakthroughs like technologies that make it possible for us to communicate here, it comes from the wild curiosity and imagination from rebels ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ป๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿ‘ฉ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿš€ So if you feel that there seems to be something pulling you back, go inside yourself and connect to a moment before everything became so seriousโ€ฆ where were you? what did you feel and experience? what did it mean? Rediscover that energy, heal and donโ€™t ever let yourself get old again. After all, as we can learn from children: curiosity, imagination and energy is our birthright๐ŸŒ…

Many great developers are feeling overwhelmed & blocked by their insecurities ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐Ÿ’ป Truth is, no matter how seasoned we are, weโ€™re all just explorers trying to figure this s*it out. No one truly knows what theyโ€™re doing and when you think about it, itโ€™s amazing that it even works at all ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ Life is about not knowing and then doing something anyway. That action will create further emotional reactions and inspirations which will move on to motivate future actions. So donโ€™t let insecurities cripple you, just ease into it, start moving and answers will follow ๐ŸŒ… Even when you make it big, you still wonโ€™t know what the hell youโ€™re doing. Donโ€™t forget that & donโ€™t ever be afraid of that. So happy monday great folks! Letโ€™s move! ๐Ÿค™๐Ÿป

Itโ€™s true what they say โ€œWith great power comes great responsibilityโ€, but I prefer switching the nouns around: โ€œwith great responsibility comes great powerโ€ ๐Ÿ˜… The more we choose to accept responsibility over our situation, the more power we will exercise over our lives. When we feel that our problems are being forced upon us against our will, we feel victimized and miserable ๐Ÿ˜ฅ When we feel that weโ€™re responsible for our problems, we feel empowered. Accepting responsibility for our situation is thus the first step in making it better. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿป Personal improvement and growth emerges from the simple realization that we, individually are responsible for the direction our lives are heading, no matter external circumstances. We donโ€™t always control what happens to us, but we control how we interpret the events, as well as how we respond to them. We are choosing the values by which we live and the metric by which we measure everything that happens to us. Often the same event can be good or bad, depending on the metrics we choose to use. The point is, we are always choosing, wheather we recognize it or not ๐ŸŒ…

Sketch is my tool of choice for UX work ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿปโ€๐ŸŽจ They just shipped v49 which includes interactive prototyping (amongst other stuff). Playing with it now to see if itโ€™s mature enough to replace the prototyping alternatives ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป
