Words cannot explain how it feels to have a friend not only invest their time into me, but also their money. The same person who has given me the connections for judging at La Jolla and the docent position at Pebble Beach recently asked me to inspect some e10 BMWs for him. This was my first opportunity to consult a car inspection for a client, and although we decided to pass on the cars, I learned a lot through the process. I was not expecting to be paid initially, but my friend insisted my time was worth it. Such a reassuring feeling to have someone in the hobby recognize my enthusiasm and growth, and trust me with such a big step as inspecting a car for purchase. I hope we can find him the right car soon!

Last week @samhurly hit me up saying he’d be in the area and wanted to shoot one of my cars. Sam is one of the best automotive photogs I know, so I just couldn’t turn down the opportunity. When we met up to shoot, along with a Canon 5D, Sam brought a Rollei and Leica which he borrowed from his uncle. Can’t wait to see how the film shots turned out. Thanks Sam for hanging out, it was good to finally get to know you more. 📷: @samhurly

I didn’t end up taking it to Bimmerfest for a number of reasons but @gregoryveizades, @jmzb10 and I had a fun, long day of detailing the 6 on Thursday.

“And here we see the evolving enthusiast, as he inspects a 1948 Cadillac from afar... oh my, look at this! It appears he has become intrigued by our camera. What an odd creature.” 📷 by @jmzb10

Before I get too far away from La Jolla to post my German(and Japanese) favorites!

I could settle on the blue/blue 930 as my only car for the rest of my life.

Another great year in the books! This year I got to enjoy it with friends, judge some gorgeous 356s, and continue to watch the show improve year after year.

I had the pleasure of visiting some automotive restoration, fabrication, and speed shops today in Berkeley. .
In just a three block radius, there are over half a dozen shops specializing in various restoration aspects, all of which stemmed from Griswold’s parts/race/resto shop back in the day. For more than 30 years, these men have lived and died by the term “friendly competition”. .
The industrial neighborhood is home to Epifani’s Restoration, Norman Racing Group, Patrick Otis & Co, Conrad Stevenson’s, Hasselgren engine building, Denis Etchevery fabrication, and more; all of which began their careers at Griswold’s, and have since become some of the biggest names in vintage automotive racing and restoration. .
Here are some pictures from Conrad Stevenson’s Alfa shop. Conrad is, simply put, the premier Alfa restorer in the U.S. He has raced and built cars for the Mille Miglia and La Carrera Panamericana, as well as meticulously restored Pebble Beach quality cars. The attention to detail and work ethic of this man are unmatchable. He purchased his first Alfa at 15 and hasn’t looked back since. His shop is beyond simple: he claims to not like tools. Conrad has a couple welders, an English wheel, a shrinker/stretcher, a janky belt sander and an old band saw. Everything else is done by hand, using hammer and dolly, files, and wrenches.

I dislike the adjective “timeless” in the description of cars. In my opinion, nothing man-made can be timeless because someone will always be able to identify and chronologically date it. Saying something is timeless disregards the story behind a product. It overlooks the era it was imagined, the goal that the designers/engineers wished to achieve, the consumer it was created for, and the competition it answered or began. Human civilization is about story telling and sharing knowledge. It’s said that the winner writes history, but we as humans get to choose what stories are continued and what stories we bury. We are in an age of information, use it to your advantage, and use it to educate others.
