Fair warning: getting up on the soapbox this morning. we have spoken before about our desire to elevate the perception of aesthetic medicine, reduce its 'commoditization', improve quality of care and safety. over the last decade, the sophistication, capabilities, and hidden dangers of many devices, (lasers, for example) have evolved to a huge degree. we see the mis-application all the time in our office. it gets old batting clean up and dealing with angry patients who wasted their money on a 'bargain' somewhere else.
in our own community, it drives us bonkers when we see advertisements for 'price matching' and we hear about owners of other offices quipping off to someone in a gym 'you don't need a doctor to do that, i can just hire a tech'. in essence, that suggests they really only care about your ability to open your wallet and fork over its contents. they don't care about the result, the safety, or you.
the actual provider of the treatment is often someone who is commissioned based on production (a powerful motivator) and they want to make the sale and move on, regardless of whether or not its right for you.
i have personally sat in on a laser safety course administered locally where a non-physician provider, who publicly labels her/hisself a 'laser specialist', asked the instructor of the course "what's the d-e junction?", when it was mentioned in the talk. (commence face palm) that's skin 101. are you really a specialist if you don’t possess basic info?
that's precisely why you need a physician.
when you go for your bargain laser or coolsculpt or whatever it is--take note: 1) did a physician or nurse practitioner see me to evaluate me and make the plan? in kansas, that is the kansas board of healing arts statute. did you only see a nurse, medical assistant, esthetician, or tech before and during your procedure? if you are a nurse, esthetician, medical assistant, or laser technician in kansas you are not allowed to diagnose and treat by the board of healing arts statutes. a physician, arnp, or pa must see the patient first. 2) during your laser, a qualified doctor must be within 5 minutes at all times. our docs are here everyday, doing the right thing.
